Living Authentically as Transgender

Living authentically looks different for everyone. Being yourself and living your truth are the core parts of this philosophy. Living an authentic life is a personal choice. There is no right or wrong way to live authentically. Learn more about the journey of self-discovery and how you can live an authentic lifestyle.

How to Be Your Authentic Self

Living authentically is the act of aligning your actions with your values and beliefs. It means focusing on your true self, rather than the version that is expected of you. For trans people, authentic living can refer to matching one's outer appearance with one's internal identity and gender. It can be a beautiful journey of discovery, self-love, and acceptance.

For transgender people, it may not always be easy to live their truth. The first step is self-discovery. Self-acceptance and self-love are also part of the process. Embracing a transgender identity is an authentic and valid part of your identity. This can include aligning your outer appearance with your internal gender identity. This can include clothing, hair, name, pronouns and more. Socially, trans people can undergo a process of introducing their new identity to family, friends, loved ones and the community. Living an authentic life may also include gender-affirming surgery and care to update the sex assigned at birth with your true gender identity.

Building a Support System During Transition

Disclosing your transgender identity to family and friends can be stressful. There is no right or wrong time to share this information to loved ones. Go at your own pace and share information when you feel comfortable. This is your unique journey. When creating a plan, consider the following:

  • Who should I tell first?
  • Is it safe to disclose this information?
  • Am I willing or able to answer questions?
  • What questions am I willing to answer?
  • Is the timing right?
  • What if someone reacts poorly?

People experience news differently. Some people may feel happy and excited for you, while others may be confused or angry. Set boundaries with loved ones to create safe spaces for yourself. Education and sharing your personal story can help create understanding.  Share resources with family to learn more about your journey. Allow loved ones to ask questions about your journey and help them understand their role in it. Ask family and friends to respect your pronouns and name choice. Bring family with you to appointments and ask them to advocate for you.
