The first Pride march was held in New York City on the anniversary of the Stonewall Riots one year later. The holiday was first designated as “Gay Pride Day” on the last Sunday of June. The one-day celebration soon evolved into a month-long celebration in major cities. Pride Month was officially proclaimed by the federal government in 1999.
