Everything to Know About LGBTQIA+ Pride Month

Pride Month is an important celebration within the LGBTQIA+ community. It commemorates civil rights struggles and equal justice for all in the LGBTQIA+ community. Learn more about the history of Pride Month and how Pride is celebrated today.

When Is Pride Month?

Pride month is celebrated annually in June in the United States and around the world. The Stonewall Uprising on June 28, 1969, was the event that set the LGBTQ Rights Movement in motion. The first Pride march was held in New York City on the anniversary of the Stonewall Riots one year later. The holiday was first designated as “Gay Pride Day” on the last Sunday of June. The one-day celebration soon evolved into a month-long celebration in major cities. Pride Month was officially proclaimed by the federal government in 1999.

Why Do We Celebrate Pride Month?

Today, millions of people observe Pride month each year. Pride month is a time to celebrate the progress and achievements of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer communities. It acknowledges the progress made and the ongoing battles for equality. The LGBTQIA+ community wants equal rights for all. This includes legal protections and access to healthcare.
